Interior Design has a long history that began in ancient Rome around 600 BC when wealthy patricians built grand houses called “Domus”. These homes were decorated using frescoes on walls, marble flooring and mosaics.
In the modern world, the interior design profession has evolved to include the development of public and commercial spaces such as restaurants, hotels, offices or retail stores.
Skills Required:
The skills required for an Interior Designer are usually acquired through a formal training program in Interior Design at post-secondary institutions. The curriculum typically includes classroom instruction on topics like architecture, engineering sciences, and graphic design elements.
One can learn interior design through many other routes, such as apprenticeship in an interior design firm or self-directed learning.
Careers:
There are many careers in Interior Design that include but not limited to becoming a designer, architect, furniture designer and art director. A career as an interior decorator is also available for those who want to work with clients in designing room layouts for offices, event halls, homes etc.
An interior designer's duties include specifying, selecting and purchasing furniture and decorative elements for a particular space.
Another job is to ensure that the final design fulfils all requirements in terms of safety, fire codes, etc., and meets budget constraints or performance parameters required by zoning regulations. Interior designers can also be involved in the construction of new buildings.
Another critical factor is maintaining a creative aspect and designing an attractive space while following all safety rules, laws, etc.
