Are you looking for free and commercially freely usable images, photographs, or even videos? In my career as a web designer, I regularly fall back on various sources.

Especially for customers with a limited budget - such as start-ups or associations - this has created the opportunity to use professional images for their website or print products such as business cards, flyers, or brochures. The advantages and disadvantages of the individual stock platforms can be found in detail below.

#1 Unsplash

The top of the top 3 is Unsplash. With almost 200,000 active photographers, almost 2 million images, and 3.5 billion requests per month, Unsplash is one of the best-known and largest providers of free and commercially usable stock images.

This wide range is well maintained and also of high quality. Unfortunately, the platform is only in English. Content is primarily aimed at the American market.

Here's why we rank Unsplash number #1:

- Free of charge and commercially usable

- No author's name required

- Relatively large selection of high-quality images

- You can use it without registration

- Good keywording / categorization

- Only English search terms can be used

- Some primarily image from the American & Asian region

#2 Pexels

The second source I like to use is Pexels. The German-language platform for stock images offers not only high-quality photographs but also countless videos. Even if the choice is a bit limited with the latter, videos are also made available in good quality and a resolution of up to 4K.

Here is what we like about Pexels:

- High-quality videos (up to a resolution of 4K)

- Free of charge and commercially usable

- No author required

- Good selection of high-quality images

- It can be used without registration

- Good keywording / categorization

- Advertising with alternative images from paid stock pages

- Less selection than, for example, Pixabay

#3 Pixabay

The third and last member of the group is Pixabay. This page can also be used in other languages. In addition to images and videos, even vector graphics - i.e., loss-free scalable illustrations - can be found and used on Pixabay.

Besides, you can search for desired motifs based on color. This is particularly useful if you want to move in a given world of colors. Only the quality of the motifs and recordings cannot keep up with Unsplash or Pexels - but it is sometimes more authentic. Also, registration is required to activate the download of full-resolution images.

Some highlight of its features are:

- High-quality videos (up to a resolution of 4K)

- Vector graphics available

- Free of charge and commercially usable

- No authors mention required

- Relatively large selection of high-quality images

- It can be used without registration

- Good keywording / categorization

- Lower quality of the motifs (partly more authentic)

- Compulsory registration for motifs in full resolution

- Advertising with alternative images from paid stock pages
