Why Are Name Cards Still Used Today Part One
As time passes and technology moves on, some practices adapt and evolve, while others fall out of use and fade into obsolescence, and yet, some endure largely unchanged. Name cards have been used as far as the late 1880s, and they are still common today.
Businessmen, lawmen, professors, and other types of professionals still exchange these cards amongst business contacts and clients, even as phones become more ubiquitous and useful for recording contact information,
This is mostly based on the fact that a simple card has some useful traits you would not realize at first glance.
A Tried and True Method
The more complex a technology, the more problems appear, due to the simple fact that more moving parts lead to more opportunities for something to go wrong.
Perhaps your phone is low on battery and you did not bring your charger, or your memory is full. Anything from damaged batteries to malware affecting your phone can leave it unable to record contact data at the worst possible time.
On the other side, a simple name card printing can give the recipient a name, phone number, business address, and in more modern times, social media addresses; all that information given with the single action of handing a card over.
Consider the practicality of the card itself: You could exchange phone numbers and create a contact, but that in itself is a process that will take a few minutes. In a short meeting, you often will not have that luxury; instead, you hand them all the information needed in the card, and the recipient can easily annotate the information after you have left.
